Hamas – some etymology

Hamas is just another name of a terrorist organization one might think, just another name like the other stuff, al-Qaeda, Hezbollah, … well actually it isn’t. (Nor are the other ones for that sake but that’s not the point here)

The word (حماس -Hamās) is one of the oldest words in Semitic languages. It is translated in Classical Arabic context as “enthusiasm”, “zeal” and even “fighting spirit”. Furthermore there is a collection of Classical Arabic poems known as الحماسة – al-Hamāsa or chivalry poetry.

And much more, the name Hamas must be seen as an acronym. The words meant are included in the logo of Hamas (see pic). It reads حركة المقاومة الإسلامية – Haraka(t) al-Muqāwama al-Islāmiyya, Islamic Resistance Movement. In transcription ح م ا س – h a m ā s
